Here I Am (February 17, 2020)

Well, I'm still here in Peru. This past week has felt like a month, but then again it feels like I was just barely in the MTC two days ago. Almost a month in the real mission, and this past week my body let me know just how different things are here. It's been rough health wise considering the amount of walking we do, up mountains and basically hiking trails. That combined with this new food and the air here lead me to a very low point physically this past week.
However, I believe the worst is behind me now, and I am on the healing stretch. I was expecting this of course, and it is a good thing to realize that things will always get better.

This is the message I wanted to share with you today, that no matter how bad the situation you are currently in, it WILL get better. My cousin is now in her mission and it saddens me because I know somewhat of what she is about to go through, but I'm also very happy because I know she will pull through to the better part and be all the stronger for it. It's also given me a greater appreciation for the work I'm doing, teaching others truths, to help their low times become better.
The language of Spanish is beginning to be unlocked, hallelujah. I can pretty much understand what people are saying now and believe me that the language they teach in the MTC is different than what and how people speak here. I've noticed now that not only is it a different language but it is also a different way of speaking. "Yeah duh Elder Baird, that's what a foreign language is"thank you thank you inner self, but what I mean is technically Spanish is very formal. Instead of saying do you want to do this, it would be something like "would it be to your liking if you were to do this thing". I may be boring you now but when I figured out that you can't directly translate what people mean, It was a revelation.

I've included some pictures here, and I plan to send more, but the most important one is the head of a "cuy" which is a guinea pig or however you spell it. The fruit is a granadilla, which was weird. Next is probably the safest electrical engineering I've seen for years. And many more things.
Sincerely yours,
The in"peru"ving missionary
Elder Baird
